Rajesh Hamal, a Nepali actor with so much notoriety people often call him “Maha-Nayak” which means “Great Actor,” needs to listen to his favorite radio drama and the rest of the actors and production crew join him.This is the promotional spot that has run on national and local TVs throughout Nepal for the past month as scores of people have started to tune in to what Hamal calls his favorite show. The radio show is Mai Sari Sunakhari (“Orchid, Like Me”). It launched in April and will run for two years (208 episodes) in the Nepali language. It’s produced by Population Media Center (PMC) a nonprofit that uses entertainment to address health and human rights globally.Mai Sari Sunakhari addresses numerous issues, including early marriage, girls’ education, gender equity, and others.

“Rajesh Hamal is the most popular superstar of the country,” says Rajan Parajuli, PMC’s Country Representative in Nepal. “Because of his extraordinary performance in Nepali cinema over the past two decades and his very non-controversial image, he has become the icon for all age groups. He has never done promotion for any radio show before.”

This sounds like a stroke of luck to get Nepal’s superstar to promote your radio drama, but the relationship is based on a lot more than luck – it’s based on a shared desire to improve people’s lives. Hamal is the ambassador for the National Campaign of the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare in Nepal. He publicly strongly supports ending child marriage and gender-based violence

The Election Commission (EC) has prepared a draft bill with the provision not allowing the temporary voters to cast votes in the election of provincial assembly. The draft, however, has a provision to allow them to cast vote in the House of Representatives. The EC has made the provision in the draft prepared for provincial assembly member election that the voter, whose name has been registered in the voters list of any village body or municipality of any constituency, can cast vote only there. At a programme organised by the EC to collect suggestion of political parties on the bill here today, political parties did not give any suggestion on the provision. Increase threshold: Big parties Leaders of the big political parties, who participated in the discussion, suggested the EC not to make provision of same ‘threshold’ for the House of Representatives and the provincial assembly. The EC has made provision of 1.5 per cent threshold in both assemblies in the draft. Representatives of Nepali Congress and CPN (UML) suggested to make provision of at least five per cent threshold in the House of Representatives and seven per cent in the provincial assembly. NC central member, Min Bahadur Bishwokarma, suggested the EC to increase the threshold, manage the election fund, arrange for certain grant for encouraging women candidates in the direct election system and declare special electoral constituencies. On the occasion, CPN (UML) leader, Raghuji Pant, called for 10 per cent threshold in parliament and seven per cent in provincial assembly for sake of a stable government. Guaranteed vs. Non-Guaranteed Permanent Life Insurance Policies
Fifty years ago, most life insurance policies sold were guaranteed and offered by mutual fund companies. Choices were limited to term, endowment or whole life policies. It was simple, you paid a high, set premium and the insurance company guaranteed the death benefit. All of that changed in the 1980s. Interest rates soared, and policy owners surrendered their coverage to invest the cash value in higher interest paying non-insurance products. To compete, insurers began offering interest-sensitive non-guaranteed policies.

Guaranteed versus Non-Guaranteed Policies
Today, companies offer a broad range of guaranteed and non-guaranteed life insurance policies. A guaranteed policy is one in which the insurer assumes all the risk and contractually guarantees the death benefit in exchange for a set premium payment. If investments underperform or expenses go up, the insurer has to absorb the loss. With a non-guaranteed policy the owner, in exchange for a lower premium and possibly better return, is assuming much of the investment risk as well as giving the insurer the right to increase policy fees. If things don’t work out as planned, the policy owner has to absorb the cost and pay a higher premium.

Nepal’s Prime Minister Prachanda today said he is committed to amend the Constitution to address the demands of all indigenous communities of the country including the Madhesis.Addressing a programme organised by the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities here to mark the 22nd International Day of the World’s Indigenous People, the Prime Minister said, “the government would try to implement the Constitution in a way that all the oppressed ethnic communities and indigenous people would feel their ownership in it.” He said he is committed to make the Constitution acceptable to all people through amendment to it.The government is working towards forging a national consensus towards that direction, he added.The Madhesis and various indigenous nationalities have been demanding the identity based federalism to be incorporated in the statute, that was promulgated in September last year. The Madhesi parties had led the six months-long agitation, mainly to protest against the seven-province federal model enshrined in the Constitution.The protests by Madhesis, mostly of Indian-origin, had also disrupted the supplies of petroleum products and cooking gas among other essentials to Nepal

Fish production in Nepal is confined to inland waters including ponds, lakes, reservoirs and rivers. The southern Terai region of the country is the main area for warm water aquaculture. Rainbow trout is the best suited exotic fish for growing commercially in mid-hills of Nepal. The culture technology and seed of rainbow trout are available in theRainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) was introduced to Nepal for the first time in the late 1960s and early 1970s from UK, Japan and India. It could not survive due to the lack of technical know-how and was re-introduced from Japan in 1988. During this period, the Nepal Agricultural Research Council developed the breeding and culture technology for this species. Rainbow trout is a carnivorous species which requires high protein feed and well oxygenated water. In nature it feeds on aquatic insects, small crustaceans and small fish. It can be cultured using artificial feed of no less than 20 to 30 percent of animal protein

CPN-Maoist Centre Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has conceded he made a mistake by going it alone instead of taking the party rank and file into confidence while deciding to replace the KP Sharma Oli-led ruling coalition. Prachanda’s self-criticism comes amid criticism from Maoist leaders, including Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Top Bahadur Rayamajhi and Shakti Basnet. The Maoist supremo ate the humble pie at the party headquarters’ meeting on Sunday, effectively putting a debate to rest. At the meeting held at his Lazimpat residLeaders, including Shrestha, Rayamajhi and Basnet, had criticised Prachanda for taking a decision on replacing the Oli government without discussing the matter in the party. Party leaders were not on the same page over leaving the Oli government. But leaders claimed after Sunday’s meeting that they have reached an understanding on continuing discussions on the party’s decision and implementing the same unitedly. Maoist leader Agni Sapkota told Onlinekhabar: Prachanda, Narayan Kaji and Badalji (Ram Bahadur Thapa) have reached an understanding. They have agreed to move ahead by making institutional decisions. At the meeting, Prachanda had briefed the participants about latest political developments, according to Sapkota.
